Dear Lilith Fair,

Musical instruments, and especially musical instrument hybrids, pervade my dreams. Last night I had a dream my cousin got married and I landed in a room housing the gifts. I sat on the floor ogling the neatly packaged boxes of accordions, chord organs, glockenspiels, toy pianos, marching bass drums, and huge tomes of sheet music dedicated and rewritten for each instrument (such as a 10 pound book entitled “Pink Floyd for Toy Piano”). I was most excited about the particular hybrid instrument the newlyweds were given which was a combination chord organ-glockenspiel. I remember thinking, “If I got one of these I wouldn’t have to sit the glockenspiel on top of the chord organ when I play– I could just use this nifty little instrument!”

Dear Lilith Fair,

I was sorting through some papers and I found one that was dated almost exactly a year ago from now with this written on it:

Sometimes I have horrible dreams that I’m back in Madonna Land. Except in my dreams Madonna and I are always in a room together with a piano or white furniture. And she is very nice and we talk. Last night I had a dream I had to go see Tracy, and to see her I had to walk through the room where Gwenyth Paltrow was giving birth. She was laid out on a table, but being her nice self, she stuck her head up and asked how I was. I talked to her, but felt weird because she was giving birth and I thought she should go back to that.

It is these kinds of things that pervade my subconscious. These people whose lives I threaded through when they didn’t know I was there playing their pianos, eating their cupboard munchies, or trying to get my paychecks from their employee…

Dear Lilith Fair,

I just woke up from a dream in which I was walking down the street and I started to hear a familiar voice singing. I turned a corner and the next small street was lined with tall buildings sporting many balconies. The singing was getting louder and I looked up to see people standing in the street and on each balcony quietly listening. I was trying to figure out if the singing was being projected from someone’s apartment or if it was live. I looked up once more to see Sarah McLachlan on one of the highest balconies. I thought, “Of course! I knew I knew that voice!” At the end of the song she had magically descended to the street. When she was finished I don’t remember clapping, I just remember everyone smiling. Since I was so close to her I decided I must go up and say something. A couple of people spoke to her and then I said, “That was beautiful! Your voice is so wonderful! Also, I’ve started a Lilith Fair blog!” She looked at me and said, “That’s a good idea.”
