Song Journal 1: Happy 04/12/2010
Dear Lilith Fair,
Last night I saw Chris Barron (Spin Doctors) perform live for the first time. The Spin Doctors’ album “Pocket Full of Kryptonite” was the first CD I ever bought. I also found a Spin Doctors t-shirt at a thrift store and I used to think it was really cool when I would wear it around my middle school. Hearing Chris’s familiar voice sing “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” and “Two Princes” put a huge smile on my face. So many of Chris’s songs made me smile and dance. When I came home I recorded a song journal about experiencing his performance.
(*This is the first song on this blog I am listing as a “Song Journal” although other songs here were created with the same process– sit down, press record, play/sing, see what comes out, upload to blog. To me a Song Journal is a way to get thoughts and feelings out like one would in writing, except I am doing it through song. Song Journals are not finished songs but have the potential to be. Who knows how all the song thoughts will end up!?)

Upon my return from SXSW I sat down at the piano and wrote and recorded a song about change, transformation, and giving in. (At the end of the song I do allude to Mr. Bowie– I couldn’t help it)!

Young Girl in the Music World 01/07/2010
Dear Lilith Fair,
Speaking of why Lilith Fair DOES still need to exist, I have a song called “Young Girl in the Music World,” which focuses on the theme of men thinking they can take advantage of young women pursuing a music career. The man who I wrote this song to toured with Ray Charles and was going to play bass on my album, and then this incident happened (listen/see song) and I ended up getting Jason Mercer (Ani DiFranco’s former bass player) on the track, which seemed pretty apropos!

Looks Like I’m Not Dead 12/28/2009
Dear Lilith Fair,
I often like to sit down with an instrument and a microphone, press record, and see what comes out. Many times only pieces of songs are recorded, but sometimes entire songs arrive. When I sat down a few days ago and pressed record this is what came to be:

Dear Lilith Fair,
The only barbie dolls (and barbie-like dolls) I had as a kid were Rocker Barbie and Jem (that awesome pink-haired lead singer of The Holograms). It makes sense, then, that in 4th grade I wanted to be a Punk Rocker for Halloween. When I went to school in my costume, a kid said to me, “You look like a hooker.” I said to him, “What’s that?” I don’t remember his exact explanation, but I do remember crying.

Dear Lilith Fair,
When Jewel came to my school I was a Cheerleader. Can you believe it? I have a song called “School” which talks about being a skinny cheerleader, as well as being called names in elementary school like “Human Barbie Doll” (because I was so “fragile like a doll”) and “Hooker” (because of a Halloween costume). Oh, those school days!
